Songs For Revolutions was borne of a common heritage shared by people in both the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America peoples – songs that represent a call to action, or ‘canción de protesta’, a form of artistic and musical expression that is closely linked to moments of major social change. While dictatorships controlled all of the information channels, the songs allowed the revolutionary message to
spread, helping to awaken people’s consciences and join in efforts to build a democratic society.

This show brings together a representative sample of protest music from several countries in these parts of the world, from the Mexican Revolution (early 20th century) to the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s, the Cuban Revolution of the 1950s, the resistance movements in countries like Chile, Argentina and Brazil (second half of the 20th century), and the Carnation Revolution in 1974.
