At this concert, Camerata Atlântica, a project that has focussed on the sounds of Latin America, will be performing a selection of pieces composed by the great masters of European Baroque to celebrate the Christmas period. It will open with a tribute to the historic setting of the concert, which is said to be the birthplace of Lisbon’s favourite saint (the Church of Santo António), with the piece “Variations on the Saint Anthony Chorale”, a pilgrim hymn which was initially attributed to Joseph Haydn, but is nowadays thought to have been composed by his student Ignatz Pleyel.

In a set where Baroque dominates, the name of J.S. Bach couldn’t be overlooked. Here he’s represented by Suite No. 3 in D major and by the Christmas Oratorio – an extensive and inspired work (from both a musical and literary point of view) which is much celebrated in Baroque musical heritage. Meanwhile, Arcangelo Corelli’s “Christmas Concerto” had an impact on the figures from Portuguese nativity scenes of the 1700s, where pipers are often depicted showing the way to the shepherds and wise men coming to worship the newborn.

The concert finale promises to be triumphant with an interpretation of Antonio Vivaldi’s “Gloria in Excelsis Deo”, one of the best-known religious pieces in the world. A hymn that can be recited (it is, after all, part of the Christian liturgy – both Catholic and Protestant) and famous for evoking a kind of mystical ecstasy in those who hear it.
