This Christmas, we’ll be bringing music to Lisbon Cathedral, whose foundations date back to the 12th century, making it one of the oldest Portuguese monuments. A long series of modifications, earthquakes and reconstructions has made the Cathedral a mixture of styles, but many of the original features of the Medieval Age can still be identified.

This grandiose stage demanded a concert which could live up to the surroundings. The challenge was accepted by the Regina Coeli Choir and Banda da Armada, who will perform two breathtaking pieces: the first is “Lauda per la Nativitá del Signore”, a landmark in European sacred music, written by Italian composer Otorrino Respighi, known for his orchestral pieces and symphonic poems.

The second is John Rutter’s “Gloria” which, despite its liturgical text, was imagined as a concert piece. Rutter based his composition on various Gregorian chants that use the same text and the piece is divided into three sections (allegro vivace, andante, vivace and rhythmic), in a structure similar to a symphony. These sections invoke different feelings: exaltation, devotion and jubilation. It’s the latter that we hope the audience takes with them.
