Despite renditions of Messiah being almost as much of a Christmas tradition as eggnog in Anglophone countries, curiously it was actually written to be performed at Easter; only the first third talks about the birth of Christ, the second and third parts focus on his death and resurrection.

When G.F. Handel first performed the work in the 18th century, it was considered blasphemous. Handel even thought about naming it “The Sacred Oratorio” instead of Messiah, to try to lessen the controversy that it caused and it ended up being premiered in Dublin rather than in London.

Almost 300 years after its premiere, it continues to be his most well-known work, with the Hallelujah chorus considered the most famous musical piece in the world.
In this concert, Messiah will be interwoven with works by John Rutter (contemporary composer) and the cantata Ceremony of Carols, by Benjamin Britten. The latter (also a classic of the season) was composed during the Second World War, when the musician was crossing the Atlantic on a cargo ship. The work, with texts in Latin and archaic English, is based on the book The English Galaxy of Shorter Poems.

A wonderful celebration performed by the voices of Lisboa Cantat’s Children’s, Youth and Symphony Choirs in the grand setting of the Church of São Roque (whose interior gilded carving is an exponent of mannerist and baroque decorative arts in Portugal).
