The last concert of Ensemble Vox Angelis’ tour to mark the Centenary of the Apparitions at Fátima takes place on the holiday of the Immaculate Conception (Patroness of Portugal) at the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha, a classified national monument since 1910.

The programme includes essential pieces from the canon of Mary-inspired music: Stabat Mater and Salve Regina, both by Giovanni Pergolesi and composed towards the end of his life when he found himself sick and at a Franciscan convent.

Ave Maria by Giulio Caccini, on the other hand, remains shrouded in mystery: although its composition is attributed to the 16th century Italian composer, the fact is that the piece only became well known in 1970s, with speculation that it was written at that time by a Russian composer. The concert opens with the famous Adagio de Albinoni, a passage often used in cinema and advertising and ends with well-known Christmas songs, when the audience is invited to loosen up their vocal chords and sing along with choir.

When you attend the concert, pay special attention to the church’s façade: this, along with the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and the Torre de Belém, is one the great structures of the Manueline style which survived the earthquake of 1755 (although the rest of the building was destroyed and subsequently rebuilt, with bits taken from different churches).
