Perhaps it’s because of American films, but we can all clearly picture in our mind’s eye the gospel choirs that fill churches with music and rhythm, in upbeat celebrations of faith and hope.
Although gospel can encompass various styles, all stem from the same root: the Christian music of the black community in the United States of America. The pieces are almost always sung a cappella with the rhythm marked by clapping and foot-stomping.
At this concert performed by the Gospel Collective, well-known classics that announce the arrival of Jesus on Christmas night are sung alongside black spirituals that originated in the fields where the only respite was found in faith.
In more modern songs of praise, the Christian message is conveyed using hymns with a more urban sound, while there will also be room for worship music of African origin.
The Gospel Collective move freely amongst different genres: from more traditional gospel to the new urban gospel or afro-gospel. Their versatility is reflected in the countless collaborations they’ve been part of, such as with Wraygunn, Rita Redshoes or Luísa Sobral amongst many others.
The concert will take place at the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Fátima – a striking building of Portuguese modernist architecture and the first religious building to be built after the establishment of the Republic.
