NOVA ERA VOCAL ENSEMBLE

The Jesu, Meine Freude program is composed by  works of Henry Purcell, Johann Sebastian Bach, Felix Mendelssohn and Fernando Lopes-Graça. The central work of the program is Jesu, Meine Freude (Jesus, my joy), the oldest and largest motet, composed in 1723 by Johan Sebastian Bach for the funeral of Johanna Maria Käsin, which includes the text of the homonymous hymn, written and composed by Johann Franck, alternated with verses from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Romans. Mendelssohn composed several works with sacred texts, but only a few were written specifically for the liturgical service, such as Warum toben die Heiden and Richte mich, Gott. The program ends with two pieces from the First Christmas Cantata by Fernando Lopes-Graça.
