The São Luiz Municipal Theatre opens the doors to Christmas with a concert by the Orquestra Académica Metropolitana (OAM) and the Universidade Nova de Lisboa Choir, with pieces by the renowned composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven.

Mozart’s most well-known religious composition is, without doubt, Requiem, written in the last months of his life in Vienna. There are, however, several others which arouse the interest of more attentive ears. Such is the case of Coronation Mass, from Vesperae solennes de Confessore...and also Missa Longa (Long Mass) in C Major. It’s known as “Longa” to distinguish it from the Missae Breves (Short Masses), which omitted various parts of the mass in order to be used in more modest celebrations. Even so, it’s not that the duration is longer, but rather the vocal and instrumental apparatus used; the mixed choir is joined by four solo vocalists and an orchestra with kettledrums, trumpets and trombones.

In the first part of the show, the OAM interprets the first of Beethoven’s nine symphonies. The nine compositions are very different from each other, each of them a masterpiece in its own right. With Symphony No.1 of 1800, Beethoven made a point of presenting an eminently classical style, close even to that of Mozart. But you could already guess what was to come, with some of the features which would characterise the work of the German composer and pianist already present, in particular the prominent use of woodwind instruments.
