The Basílica de Nossa Senhora dos Mártires, in Chiado, is an example of the Baroque style which is so characteristic of Pombaline Lisbon. The interior is characterised as much by its arched-vault ceiling with allegories dedicated to King Afonso Henriques and to the capture of Lisbon, as it is by its marble altar. Another feature of this basilica is its “Machado & Cerveira” organ, dating to the 19th century, which has recently been restored and is considered one of the best in the country.

And it’s by way of this organ that we’ll be travelling through the music of Iberia and Italy of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. This is a chance to listen to pieces written by renowned composers for the organ, such as Marcos Portugal, Padre Davide da Bergamo and Andrea Luchesi, in a simultaneously dramatic and festive atmosphere, befitting the Christmas season.

With sonatas, variations and tentos de meio registo, the recital will end with a lively Rondo for four hands, written by composer Ramón Ferreñac.
