A concert to celebrate 70 years of a great composer. Of a poet. Of a rock star. Of a bohemian. Jorge Palmer is all this and also the writer of so many songs that were the soundtrack to so many lives over recent decades.

His story is well known: he started studying classical music while still a child, but in his adolescence and early adulthood rock invited him to take a walk on the wild side. His piano was joined by a guitar and an interest in Anglo-Saxon music. With the master Ary dos Santos, he perfected his poetic streak and fled from war, exiling himself in Denmark, where he continued to compose and write.

Following the 25 April Revolution, he returned to Portugal and recorded his first LP in 1975 “Com uma Viagem na Palma da Mão”, featuring songs written during his exile. After releasing a second album, he left the country again, singing and playing guitar on the streets of various cities and settling in Paris, where he played on the Métro for a few years.

When he returned to Portugal again, he released some of his most successful albums, both with critics and the public.  “O Lado Errado da Noite” (1984) was described as “the best side of Jorge Palma” and 1989’s “Bairro do Amor” was his “Palme d’Or” and unanimously considered “one of Portuguese music’s albums of the century”. These were followed by records which are an intrinsic part of the history of Portuguese music, starting with “Só” and “Voo Nocturno”, without forgetting his projects “Rio Grande” and “Cabeças no Ar”

The most recent period in Jorge Palma’s life has been a very busy one with projects like “Juntos”, where he shared a stage with Sérgio Godinho, and also a celebration of his most important records such as “Bairro do Amor” and “Só”, the latter of which resulted in the live album “SÓ ao vivo”.

In 2020, the year in which he celebrates his 70th year, a new album of original songs has been promised. Time hasn’t affected his voice or his creativity because, as he himself sings, “as long as there’s a road to walk, we’ll carry on. While there’s still wind and sea, we will not stop.”
