The concerts of the Gulbenkian Orchestra and Choir in the Vale do Silêncio have been remarkable moments in the Lisboa na Rua programme, with open-air performances of some the most popular classical music in an original setting. There’ll be more of the same this year on a night when the love felt between classical music and the audience promises to be particularly striking.

Nuno Coelho will be conducting a universally popular collection of operatic arias, connected through a journey which, despite taking a variety of different paths, always ends up in the giddiness of love. But while love, as we well know, can manifest itself in ecstatic and romantic feelings, it can also reveal itself as tragic and cruel. The indomitable nature of love, that overwhelming feeling that has forever overpowered the actions of men and women (as we hear in Bizet’s famous Carmen or in Eboli’s mourning in Verdi’s Don Carlo). This concert places before us different situations in which the lives of the characters are transformed by the action of love. A night on which, contradicting its name, the Vale do Silêncio will be flooded with the music emanating straight from the labyrinths of the heart.
