Lisbon Underground Music Ensemble (LUME) is a project by composer Marco Barroso whose aim is to provide a space for the expression of his music, in a particular orchestral context, with an affinity for the classic Big Band model. The group began in 2006 and includes some of the most experienced musicians of the Portuguese jazz and classical scene. Whether it’s through the (very often ironic) dramatisation of the practices and vocabularies which pass through rock and classical music or forays into experimentalism, the music of Marco Barroso reconstructs, in an original way, the heavy load of Big Band heritage, thereby escaping its more conventional standards and opening up new aesthetic perspectives.
