These are the stories of four inspiring women: Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector; Mexican painter Frida Kahlo; Chilean writer and composer Violeta Parra and the Bolivian military leader of indigenous ancestry Juana Azurduy. In these stories there are no crowns or castles, but real women, who challenged the norm and revolutionised the world through literature, art and politics. To remember these women, these flesh-and-blood heroines, is to show that life isn’t a “fairytale” and that it’s worth fighting for what you believe in.

Clarice Lispector was born in a small village in the Ukraine, but became the most popular writer in Brazil. She wrote about the mysteries of the Universe and the human soul, but also about hens, rabbits and a dog which ate cigarettes.

Commissioned by São Luiz Municipal Theatre and EGEAC’s Public Space Programming department, it’s based on the Antiprincesas collection (Tinta da China/EGEAC)
