Water is the common denominator in this edition of Lisboa Soa. Following on from previous years at Tapada das Necessidades and Estufa Fria, the festival will descend into the city’s water reservoirs and invites you to stop and listen to the sounds which come out of them. A meeting of art, urbanism, and auditory culture which brings together installations, workshops, sound walks and artistic residences that will bring to Lisbon names like Lukas Khune and Tomoko Sauvage.

SIRIUS (Yaw Tembe e Francisco Trindade), Portugal

A duo comprising trumpeter Yaw Tembe and percussionist Francisco Trindade (Monsieur Trinité), who will be performing their debut album, Acoustic Main Suite Plus The Inner One, recorded at the Panteão Nacional.

TOMOKO SAUVAGE, Japan

Tomoko Sauvage has been investigating the sound and visual properties of water in different states (as well as those of ceramics) combined with electronics. In this concert, she’ll be demonstrating the sounds that result from using China bowls of different sizes, filled with water and amplified via hydrophones (underwater microphones), creating a kind of natural synthesizer that generates a fluid timbre using waves, drops and bubbles.

BANHA DA COBRA (Mestre André e Carlos Godinho), Portugal

A project that begins with the sonic imaginary of artisanal, ritualistic and traditional activities and landscapes. The compositions are created as sound ruins based on an ecology between the sustainability of the sound nature of what is found in places and objects, and their appropriation and transformation.

LUÍS BITTENCOURT, Brazil

Memórias Líquidas (Liquid Memories) is an instrumental music show which presents water using new sound combinations. It consists of a concert with contemporary percussion pieces which use water as a source of artistic exploration (in both symbolic and real form) through the manipulation of the liquid as a true musical instrument.

RICARDO JACINTO, Portugal

Making use of a sound amplification system distributed around different parts of a cello, Ricardo Jacinto explores the possibility of a sonic fragmentation of his gestures and the instrument´s body. During these improvisations, immersion in the subtle timbral nuances of the cello is achieved through the sounding of the acoustic space and the surrounding soundscape.

JANA WINDEREN, Norway

Jana Winderen’s live performances focus on audio environments and ecosystems which are hard for humans to access, both physically and aurally. Working in various locations, Winderen searches for sounds from hidden sources, frequencies which are not possible for us to perceive, as well as from places and creatures that are hard to access.

The closing concert of Lisboa Soa will take place in the Reservatório da Patriarcal with Henrique Fernandes and Jorge Quintela’s sound installation Sublumia, created especially for this space.

EDU COMELLES, Spain

A commentated audioconference in which Edu Comelles will unwrap his own creative process in the area of soundscapism and field recordings. This activity will be structured around a flow of artistic work which will involve microphones as creative tools, site-specific sound recordings, sound archives and live performance with digital media. The conference will include the playing and live performance of several of the artist’s short pieces.

LISTENING STATION

LUKAS KUHNE, Germany

A sound sculpture with different sized modules which will serve as directional hearing aids, frequency filters and devices for amplifying voices. These pieces will be used for guided sound walks through this subterranean world, including the tunnels connecting the reservoirs, the garden at ground level and the Mãe d´Água terrace, providing a varied understanding of aural and spatial perception.

A freely-suspended floating garden at the top of the Mãe d’Água, but also below the surface and what is revealed there.

EDU COMELLES, Spain

Sínia, or noria in English, is a wheel-like machine used for lifting water into a small aqueduct or for the purpose of irrigation. It consists of a vertical iron wheel with buckets attached to it. This installation places the rusty sound of this abandoned rural hydraulic engine in the Casa de Registo. The idea is to bring to the hall the soundscape of a long since disappeared (and now redundant) technology: drawing water from a well. All the sounds have been recorded across various sessions since 2012, but the sound of the noria is always changing and evolving, depending on the humidity, the climate and the season. The result is a constantly-changing generative sound composition which resonates in the Casa de Registo like a litany or a requiem.

SUBLUMIA

HENRIQUE FERNANDES and JORGE QUINTELA , Portugal

Sublumia consists of a series of sound objects/visual devices positioned around the Reservatório da Patriarcal which can be characterized as facilitators in the symbiotic relationship between the emitter/object and the receptor/space. The objects which make up this installation use sound capture and light projection from and on various liquids and electromagnetic elements, such as small engines, air pumps, and sound induction devices.

MYCONNECT

SAšA SPAčAL, Slovenia

Myconnect is a symbiotic interspecies connector that, with its circuit of signals and impulses, performs an immersive experience of interdependence between fungal mycelium and the human body. On entering the capsule, the individual is equipped with a heartbeat sensor, headphones and vibration motors which are placed on various parts of the body.

DIY MIC BUILDING

EDU COMELLES, Spain

This workshop allows you to enter the world of DIY microphony by making two different types of microphones: a contact microphone (ideal for amplifying string or percussion instruments or for capturing resonance through contact with different materials) and a binaural stereo microphone (ideal for capturing ambiences, instruments and field recordings, concerts, lectures or interviews).

The Atlas of Utopian Instruments is a collection of instruments, sound sources and electro-acoustic devices which all form a bridge between the new possibilities of electro-acoustic composition and musical performance. This workshop focuses on a collaborative sound performance which will be devised exclusively to be performed in this space at the end of the workshop. In addition to taking part in the sound performance itself, participants will have the chance to make their own instruments/sound objects to be used during the performance

Lisbon will be revealing some of its secrets on this sound journey through some of its most hidden, underground corners. Let’s explore the acoustic space which surrounds us, from the surface to the depths of the city!

At this workshop, we’ll be encouraging participants to listen actively to the world around us, with the help of some techniques and equipment that allow us to hear some of the things that Lisbon doesn’t usually reveal.
