Music returns to the Vale do Silêncio, with the Gulbenkian Choir and Orchestra.
With Carmina Burana still fresh in the memory, this year the public was allowed to choose the music by means of a vote which included a selection of classical compositions turned into sound tracks for memorable films such as Amadeus, West Side Story, 2001: Space Odyssey and Apocalypse Now.

Gulbenkian Orchestra
In 1962, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation decided to set up a permanent orchestral body. It began with only 12 members and was originally called the Gulbenkian Chamber Orchestra. Over a period of more than 50 years of activity, the Gulbenkian Orchestra (as it has been known since 1971) has steadily grown and today boasts 60 musicians,

Gulbenkian Choir
Founded in 1964, the Gulbenkian Choir currently consists of around a hundred singers, but also performs in smaller groupings. As such, it sings both as an a cappella group, performing 16th and 17th century polyphony, as well as together with the Gulbenkian Orchestra (or others) for classical or romantic works.

Cristiana Oliveira, Soprano
Cátia Moreso, Alto
Marco Alves dos Santos, Tenor
André Henriques, Barítono

Joana Carneiro, conductor
Joana Carneiro is Principal Conductor of the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, Guest Conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra and Artistic Director of the Gulbenkian Orchestra Internship. In 2009, she was named Music Director of Berkeley Symphony, succeeding Kent Nagano and becoming only the third conductor in the 40-year history of the orchestra.
