For the opening of its 8th edition at the Centro Cultural de Belém, the Summer Choral Festival has reserved the choral event of the year: the premiere of Linhagem, by Eurico Carrapatoso, a commemorative show celebrating the 500th anniversary of Ferdinand Magellan’s circumnavigation of the globe. In addition to Portuguese choirs, this year the festival will be bringing choirs from Slovenia, Spain, Ireland, Croatia and Germany to Lisbon. Conductor Paulo Lourenço is the artistic director and the jury will consist of an international panel: Lim Ai Hooi (Singapore), Eugene Rogers (USA), Jonathan Velasco (Philippines) Elisenda Carrasco (Spain) and Pedro Teixeira (Portugal).

World Premiere of LINHAGEM by the acclaimed Portuguese composer Eurico Carrapatoso. A work commemorating the five centuries since the first voyage of circumnavigation under the command of Ferdinand Magellan, which was completed (in the known waters of the Portuguese Indian Ocean) by the Basque Juan Sebastián Elcano.

Linhagem attempts to draw a line, inspired by the clinical eye of Fernando Pessoa and the great beacon of Portuguese identity that he managed to achieve in his book of poems ‘Mensagem’. The piece also includes texts by D. Dinis, Joam Zorro, António Machado and Camilo Pessanha.
