The Philharmonic Bands return to Avenida da Liberdade for the already traditional commemorative parade of the 1st of December. After an interval of one year, due to the pandemic, the National Philharmonic Bands Parade is thus once again filling the emblematic Lisbon avenue with music, but still in a reduced format in accordance with the DGS rules.
There are 19 bands that will participate this year (in 2019 there were 37 bands), involving musicians from different generations of bands and groups from different parts of the country.
The Mafra Percussion Orchestra - Academia do Bombo (Mafra-Encarnação) and the National Republican Guard Symphony Band open this 9th National Parade of Philharmonic Bands which will begin, as usual, next to the Statue of Combatants of the Great War, by 3:00 pm
This year's Banda Musical e Artística da Charneca is this year's guest to represent Lisbon, the host city of this initiative that aims to honor and publicize a musical practice with more than 200 years and which, all over the country, continues to play an important role in the civic and musical formation of children and young people.
Ending at Praça dos Restauradores, the parade culminates with the performance of the guest band, the joint interpretation of the Hymns of Maria da Fonte and the Restauração, and also the full version of the National Anthem, under the direction of the GNR Symphony Band Maestro, Lieutenant -Colonel João Cerqueira.
This initiative is a partnership between the Lisbon City Council and the 1st December Movement, organized by EGEAC.
Note: there will be changes in traffic on Avenida da Liberdade. This lane will be cut off from circulation between Marquês de Pombal and Rossio, between 12:45 and 18:00, on 1 December.
